Packing for a safari is less about bringing everything and more about bringing the right things. Most camps have laundry service, and baggage allowances on small safari aircraft are genuinely limited (often 15kg total, including hand luggage, in a soft-sided bag).
Clothing
- Neutral colors: khaki, olive, sand, muted greens. Avoid bright colors, white, and black, which can disturb wildlife or attract insects.
- Warm layers: early-morning game drives start before sunrise and can be surprisingly cold.
- Sun protection: wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses.
- Footwear: comfortable closed walking shoes, plus sandals for camp.
- Rain protection: a light rain jacket outside the dry season.
Health & Comfort
- High-SPF sunscreen and effective insect repellent.
- Personal medication plus a basic travel first-aid kit.
- Reusable water bottle (most camps provide filtered water).
- Binoculars: camps often have pairs to share, but your own means you’re never waiting your turn.
Documents & Technology
- Passport with at least six months’ validity and required visas.
- Travel insurance details, including emergency air evacuation cover.
- Camera or phone with a good optical zoom, plus spare batteries and power banks.
- Cash in small denominations for tips and local crafts.
One more thing worth packing: a flexible mindset. Game drives run on the animals’ schedule, not yours, and the best sightings usually come to those who aren’t in a hurry.
