Diani Beach, on Kenya’s south coast, is the kind of place that photographs well and lives up to it in person: powder-white sand, warm turquoise water, and a barrier reef that keeps the surf gentle enough for swimming most of the year. Snorkeling and diving along the coral reef just offshore, dolphin-watching trips at Kisite-Mpunguti Marine Park, kitesurfing — Diani is one of East Africa’s best spots for it — and quiet walks through the Colobus Conservation area to see the endangered Angolan colobus monkeys that give the coast its character. Diani is a popular add-on to a Maasai Mara or Amboseli safari, and most itineraries fly between the two rather than driving, which keeps travel time short.
Diani is a year-round destination, but the driest, sunniest stretches run from December to March and July to October. April to June brings the long rains — quieter, cheaper, and still warm, but expect afternoon showers.
